Obituary of Salvatore A Durante
Salvatore A. Durante, 94, of Peabody and formerly of East Boston, died Wednesday afternoon at Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Evelyn (Capobianco) Durante.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Doria) Durante. He was raised and educated in East Boston and has spent the last 55 years living in Peabody.
Salvatore was a veteran of World War II who served with the 79th Infantry, the “Cross of Lorraine Division” of the United States Army and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Western European Campaign Ribbon.
Following the war, Sal was employed as a statistical clerk with the Boston Naval Shipyard for over 33 years until its closing. He continued working for five more years for the Army Corps of Engineers before he officially retired in 1979.
Sal was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing golf at area courses in Massachusetts and throughout the country. He enjoyed going to the local barber shop in Peabody reminiscing about the past and talking about sports and politics. His favorite pasttime was spending time with his family and later his grandchildren and sharing in all of their activities. He will be dearly missed by all.
Sal is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Cheryl Durante of Malden, and Dennis and Karen Durante of Myrtle Beach, SC, his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Doug Royal of Haverhill. He is predeceased by his sister Clara Cino of East Boston. In addition, he is survived by his sister Marie Gulla of Miami, FL and his brothers, Frank Durante of East Boston and Joseph and his wife Janice Durante of Saugus. He will be greatly missed by his six beloved grandchildren, Mary Durante and her husband Michael Karigianis, Robert and his wife Catherine Durante, Jon Durante and fiancé Rebecca Emmanuel, Jeffrey Durante, Douglas Royal Jr and Marina Royal. He is also survived by his great grandson, Aaron Karigianis.
His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 AM at Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 AM at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Lynnfield at which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
