Obituary of Richard A Marshall, MD

Richard A. Marshall, M.D., age 87, born in Manchester, NH, son of James House and Agnes Anderson Marshall. He attended Manchester schools, graduating from Central High School in 1947. He then graduated from Tufts College in 1951 with a B.S. in Chemistry-Biology and from Tufts University School of Medicine with a M.D. in 1955. Dr. Marshall interned at Maine General Hospital in Portland, ME, spent two years as a Captain, Medical Corps U.S. Army, then took a residency in Anesthesiology at Maine Medical Center. He practiced Anesthesiology at Maine Medical Center from 1962 to 1966. In 1966, he and his family moved to Lewiston, ME and he practiced Anesthesiology at Central Maine Medical Center until his retirement in May 1995. Most of his time at Central Maine Medical Center, he was Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Marshall was a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists and a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology. He was a member of the staff of CMMC, the Androscoggin County Medical Society, Maine Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Maine Society of Anesthesiologists of which he had served as President. Dr. Marshall was also a member of Triangle Lodge of Masons in Portland, ME, and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Auburn, ME. Known to his friends as “Dick,” he loved a hearty laugh and to regale his friends and family with stories from his youth. During his work day, he loved nothing more than doing rounds, talking with patients, and was known for his ability to strike up a conversation with nearly anyone. He commonly joked that his profession was putting people to sleep, and he did not always require anesthetics to do so. Always willing to share his wisdom, at one time Dick was named “Honorary Paramedic” for training a group of Emergency Medical Technicians how to intubate. Richard was also very fond of a strong cup of coffee and a delicious meal shared with good company, with cookies for dessert. He was considered a good friend by those who knew him and was an accomplished musician, playing everything from Rachmaninoff to Joplin on his beloved Steinway almost every day. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Anne Erickson Marshall, whom he met at the Maine Medical Center in 1955. They married in Waterville, ME June 30, 1956. Richard is also survived by his daughter Martha Hitipeuw and her husband Dirk of Houston, TX, his son James Marshall of Woburn, MA and his daughter Katherine Meuse and her husband Brian of Woburn, MA. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Marshall (MJ) and Coby Hitipeuw, and Matilda and Scarlett Meuse. Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester, NH.
