Obituary of Rev. Peter Thomas Sherry, O'Carm

Rev. Peter T. Sherry, O.Carm, assigned to the Carmelite Chapel at the North Shore Mall in Peabody for 30 years, died peacefully on Tuesday evening at the Blueberry Hill Healthcare Facility in Beverly following a brief illness. Born in Chicago, IL, he lived there in his youth. Fr. Sherry entered Quigley Seminary in Chicago, then completed his Seminary College at Mt. Carmel College in Niagara Falls, NY in 1933. He took his First Vows on August 15, 1935, his Solemn Vows on Aug. 15, 1938, and Ordained into the Priesthood on November 1, 1938. His first assignment was as a Chemistry/Science Teacher at Mt. Carmel High School in the Chicago area, then entered the U.S. Army where he served as a Chaplain in the European Theatre during World War II. He returned to teaching after the war, served as a Parish Priest in Teaneck, NJ, a Superior at Mt. Carmel College in Niagara Falls, NY in the 1950’ s, then as Prior at the Carmelite Jr. Seminary in Hamilton, MA for 6 years before his last assignment at St. Theresa Chapel at North Shore Mall in Peabody for the last 30 years. He served as Chaplain to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Danvers, celebrating Sunday Mass there for 40 years. He has no living family members. Friends are invited to call at a visitation on Friday from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Carmelite Priory, 4 Wheatland St., Peabody. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday at 10 AM at the Mt. Carmel Monastery Chapel on Mt. Carmel Road in Danvers to which all may attend. Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to the Carmelite Missions, 4 Wheatland St., Peabody, MA 01960.
