Obituary of Joao dos Santos Bettencourt

Joao dos Santos Bettencourt, 92, of Peabody, died Monday at the Salem Hospital after a short illness. He was the husband of Francisca (de Jesus) Bettencourt with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. He was born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal on May 14, 1911 the son of the late Manuel and Olinda (da Gloria) Bettencourt and had resided in Peabody for the past 28 years. He had been a farmer in the Azores for 30 years and in Peabody he was a baker at the Continental Bakery for 3 years prior to his retirement. He had been a member of Our Lady of Help and the Holy Ghost Societies of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He enjoyed gardening and his family. Surviving him besides his wife are 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Manuel E. and Maria Bettencourt and John S. and Ana Maria Bettencourt all of Peabody and Jose S. and Tina Bettencourt of Haverhill, A daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Carlos de Jesus Lima of Providence, R.I., A niece, Maria B. Silva of Peabody, 8 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. His funeral will be held on Friday at 8:00 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody at 9:00 a.m. Burial in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem.
