Obituary of Robert C. Shackelton Jr.
Robert C. Shackelton Jr., 82, of Wenham, husband of Carolyn M. (Couture) Shackelton, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2016 at the Lahey Medical Center in Burlington with his family at his side. Bob was born in Boston on May 22, 1934 son of the late Robert C. and Margaret (Lull) Shackelton. Raised and educated in Malden, Bob pursued his education at the Boston Architectural Center where he received his Architectural Degree. For the past 47 years, he and his wife made their home in Wenham and also wintered in Port St. Lucie FL for many years. Bob began his career with the Design and Development “Team” that was a division of the Sheraton Hotel Chain. In the mid-sixties, the founder of Sheraton, Mr, Ernest Henderson passed away, which led the “Top Six” performers, with their long-standing roles as “hands on” designers to start their new venture which they named The Group One Inc. in Boston, and later on Bob started his own firm known as Crabtree Architects, remaining active until his retirement in 2006. During their start up years, local clients such as Augustine’s Restaurant, Karl’s Sausage Kitchen, Godfried’s Bakery and Deli, and the Blue Star Bar to name a few were their first clients that put trust in a new company, a company which continues to thrive today. On the North Shore Bob was a familiar figure at Romie’s Oyster House, Century House, the Wardhurst Restaurant and at many other eateries where he and his wife met many good friends. He was a member of the Boston Architectural Center, the American Institute of Architects and the B.P.O.E. Elks of Winthrop, MA #1078 for 36 years. He was an avid follower of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture such as Taliesin and Falling Water. In addition to his wife with whom he shared 51 years of marriage, he is survived by 3 daughters and their spouses, Susan and Thomas Bickford of Malden, Patricia J. and Richard Bertone of Danvers, and Greta M. Shackelton of Wenham and her significant other Eric Spear of Gloucester, his grandchildren Stefanie Bertone, Jennifer Bertone, Amanda Shackelton and William Shackelton Jr., and his 3 great-grandchildren Michael and Jason Burke, and Hayden Maloney. He was also predeceased by his son William Shackelton. His family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, November 28 at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Bob’s memory to the Perkins School for the Blind, 175 North Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02472. The interment will be held at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, 185 Lake St., Peabody. Please visit www.ccbfuneral.com for directions, online obituary and memorial guest book.
