Obituary of Peter Scangas

Peter Scangas 80, of Salem, loving husband of Anastasia (Yokas) Scangas, unexpectedly passed away at Salem Hospital with his family at his side. Peter was born in Monemvasia, Greece on October 20, 1936 son of Lazaros and Katerine (Traiforos) Scangas. Raised and educated in Greece, he emigrated to the United Sates in 1963 making his home in Peabody before moving to Salem in 1966. From 1963 to 1973 he was employed at the West Lynn Creamery. Peter then started his own painting business that he named Olympic Painting which soon became well known on the North Shore. He operated the business until his retirement in 1989. He was a loving father who provided a home for his family, and so enjoyed spending countless hours with his grandchildren. For over 30 years Peter and his wife summered in Greece where they spent time with their families and dear friends, and as hobbies he enjoyed spear fishing for octopus and playing cards. In addition to his wife Anastasia with whom he shared 51 years of marriage, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Kathie and Perry Eliopoulos of Ipswich, Larry and Kelly Scangas of Northboro, and George and Patricia Scangas of Georgetown, his cherished grandchildren Peter, Zachary, Jacob and Alexa Eliopoulos, Zoe and Joseph Scangas, Peter, Vasili and Alexander Scangas; a brother and his wife, Nicholas and Christine Scangas of VT; a sister and her husband, Panagiota and Peter Venetsanakos of Danvers; a brother-in-law, Pantelis Skangos of Greece, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his siblings Aphrodite Skangos and John Skangos. His family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, December 11, 2016 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His funeral will be held from the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Monday December 12th followed by a service at 11 a.m. at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody. The family requested that memorial contributions be made in Peter’s name to St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody MA 01960.
