Obituary of Mary D. (Demchuk) Smith

Mary D. (Demchuk) Smith SALEM Mary D. (Demchuk) Smith, 91, beloved wife of the late Peter Smith, died Saturday at the Peabody Glen Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody. Born in Russia, she was the daughter of the late Andre and Mocreanna (Tito) Demchuk. She emigrated to the United States at 16 years of age, first settling in New York City. She soon moved to the North Shore of Boston, and lived in Salem for most of her life. She was employed as a Leather Worker at A.C. Lawrence Leather in Peabody, and then worked in the factory for Liberty Hughes Micah Company in Peabody. Mrs. Smith lived on a family farm in Russia, and didn’ t like what she saw as World War II was developing. She overcame much adversity in Russia, and wanted a good life for herself and for her family. She was a longtime, active member at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Salem, and active in the Women’ s Guild. She worked hard to pass on her values and determination to her family, and her family loved her diligent, determined spirit in life. As a gregarious woman, she touched the life of many people and from their perspective made the world a better place. She will be missed by many, especially her family including: a son and daughter-in-law, George and Kimberly Frey Smith of Dallas, TX; one granddaughter, Peyton Smith of Dallas, TX, and other grandchildren in Louisiana; four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, besides her husband Peter, by a son Boris Semenuk and a grandson Boris Semenuk, IV, a sister and five brothers in Russia. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Service at 10 AM in St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, Salem. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 8 P.M, with the Panaheida Service will be held at 7 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
