My condolences to the Murtaugh family. John was a friend and political confident of mine back in the 60s. I believe he was also a distant relative, as our families came from the same location in western Ireland. I knew John as a person of high energy and boundless enthusiasm for any task that he undertook. He will be sorely missed. Joe fleming

John and Family I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your father. He was without a doubt my best and favorite teacher. I was lucky enough to have had him as my 6th, 7th and 8th grade teacher at the Keefe School. I can still hear him telling the class if everyone passes today's test I'll let you play softball after lunch! He would do anything to get us to study and do our homework even promising to take us to a Celtic's game which he did. A special guy, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jim McDermott

Nails, so sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. My condolences to your Mom and the rest of the Murtaughs. Your dad was very nice to me at SJP, and on a couple of occasions gave me some helpful baseball advice. It was also a great thrill being inducted into the HOF with him in 2000. I remember telling Smuz who was the MC that night, that I did not want to follow your dad to the podium. A tough act to follow! Special shout out to Cheryl, the best high school athlete to come out of the Noth Shore of our generation.

My condolences to Anita, John, Cheryl, Fred and Mary. I have so many fond memories of John when he helped out in the insurance office back in the 60's during his school vacation. We had so many laughs going back and forth to Boston. He was a wonderful man who will be missed by so many of us.

Anita, John, Cheryl, Fred and Mary - Words will never be able to express how sorry I am for your loss. You shared your husband, father and brother with so many of us for so many years and the many he touched were inspired to be the best they could be, to work harder than they ever thought they could and to care for one another. I can think of no finer role model in life than John, and I will treasure the many memories that I have had with him and all of you. I know you will all have difficult days ahead, but I hope as time passes you will be able to reflect back on how great a man he was and the many good memories you made together. Love you all - Dave Gravel

Dear Anita and entire Murtagh Family,

I was very saddened to learn of John's passing. I worked with John at the Burke School and was part of his leadership team that opened the Higgins Middle School. John was a hard working and truly dedicated educator and educational leader. When I learned that John was chosen as a recipient of the Peabody Legacy Award, I thought that the committee had made a remarkable and deserving choice. Not only was John an outstanding educator, he was a true family man as well. His determination, willingness to listen, and sense of humor were among the many fine qualities that made him a mentor and friend to me. My heartfelt condolences go out to you during this sad time.
