Obituary of George E King, Sr
George E. King, Sr, 88 of Lynnfield, died unexpectedly on Monday, December 19 at Union Hospital in Lynn. He was the devoted husband of the late Mary A. King.
Born in the Beachmont Section of Revere, he was the son of the late George and Julia (Trobasso) King. He was raised in Revere and attended Sacred Heart Boarding School in Sharon, St. Mary’s School in Lynn and Revere High School. George enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and was stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany where he worked on repairing German and Allied ships. He also traveled around Europe reclaiming and restoring abandoned vehicles and equipment. His crew also worked in Belgium, France and Sweden and before he was discharged he traveled for pleasure to Norway, Switzerland, Austria and England. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
George was part owner of GTG Manufacturing Company in Middleton for many years before retiring to pursue other leisure activities.
George enjoyed golfing and was one of the original members of the Ferncroft Country Club. His group had the distinction of being called the 6:52’s to denote their standing tee time. George was a member of the Danvers Fish & Game Club in Middleton and enjoyed target and pistol shooting. He also was an avid bird watcher and had the knowledge and ability to identify different species of birds where ever he was. George believed in the importance of conservation and throughout his life, always had a love and wonder for nature and wildlife. George always wanted to be busy, he was never idle and when he was at home, he developed an interest in model ship building. He loved to travel, especially on road trips and had visited just about every state and national park in the United States. He also spent many winters vacationing in Naples, Florida.
He is survived by his two sons, George E. King, Jr and his wife Maureen of Boxford and John King of Lake Oswego, Oregon, his sister, Patricia King of New Hampton, NH, his beloved 9 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and his dear friends, Evelyn Malveira of Lynnfield and Patricia Bettencourt of Peabody. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas King, his daughter, Julie Filmore and by his sister, Barbara Young.
George was affectionately known to his family as “Papa” and to his friends in the golf community as “SR”. His smile, his wit and his love of life will be greatly missed.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 28 at 11:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn ST., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, December 27 from 4:00 until 7:00PM. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Lynnfield.
