Obituary of Sr. Mary Frances Hurld, SND
Sr. Mary Frances Hurld, SND, (Sr. Anna Louise) went home to God on Tuesday January 10, 2017, at age 93. Sister celebrated her 75th Jubilee Anniversary as a Sister of Notre Dame this past spring. She was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, taking the name Sr. Anna Louise when she joined the Congregation. Her mother was the late Margaret C. (Colahan) Hurld, while her father, the late Daniel P. Hurld, was Superintendent of Schools in Woburn.
Sister Mary is predeceased by her five brothers and sisters: Rev. John L. Hurld, SJ; Elizabeth Hurld Rowen; Margaret M. Hurld (Sr. Emmanuella, SP); her twin, Anna Louise (Nancy) Hurld Flathers, and Daniel Hurld, Jr. Sister is survived by the members of her Notre Dame community; her sister-in-law Barbara Hurld; her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and her many close and loving friends.
A talented pianist, trained organist, and gifted choral conductor, Sister Mary Frances earned her B.A. from Emmanuel College, an M.MUS. from Boston University, and a Certificate in Gregorian Chant from Boston College. She inspired generations of students in Glee Clubs, Choral Groups, Drama Productions, and Fine Arts programs across New England, including two student orchestras who performed at Symphony Hall.
Sister Mary was a lifelong teacher whose school ministries have included Ascension School in Worcester, Holy Redeemer in East Boston, Notre Dame Academy in Roxbury, Notre Dame Training School in Ipswich, the Academy of Notre Dame in Tyngsboro, Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, and Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody.
In retirement, Sister Mary Frances lived for many years at the Notre Dame residence at Jeffreys Neck Road in Ipswich, MA, where she continued to bless the community with her many contributions to the music ministries at Ipswich.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday, January 12 at Our Lady of Queen Chapel at 30 Jeffreys Neck Road in Ipswich. The wake will be at 12:30; the prayer service at 1:30 and the Mass of Christian Burial at 2:30 PM. Burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund at the above address.
