Obituary of John Augustine "Gus" Bettencourt
John A. “Gus” Bettencourt PEABODY – John A. “Gus” Bettencourt, 70, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday January 11, 2017 following an extended illness. Born in Luz, Santa Cruz, Graciosa, Azores in Portugal, he was the son of the late Domingos and Maria (Quadros) Bettencourt. He moved to the United States at age 7, and lived in Peabody for over 60 years. He was a hard worker, and worked in construction with the Carpenters Union, in the leather industry, with the MBTA Rail Road, and at the Salem Light Plant. Gus enjoyed living quietly with family. He also had a sense of adventure, driving his 1956 Chevy Belair at the New England Speedway in Epping, NH entitled the ‘Portuguese Man O’War”. He enjoyed going to the beach, Salem Willows, and enjoyed good food with family and friends. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Wiggin of Naples, FL and Fatima Poltrino of Lynn, as well as nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Following cremation, relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for a visitation today (Monday) from 3 – 5 P.M. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, with a Funeral Service in his honor to close the visitation at 4:45 P.M.
