Obituary of Antonio A. "Tony" Sousa

Antonio A. “Tony” Sousa 85, of Peabody, husband of Delminda P. (Avila) Sousa, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2016 with his loving and caring family by his side at the Lahey Medical Center in Burlington. Tony was born in Faial Azores Portugal on May 1, 1931 son of Manuel and Maria (Angustias) Sousa. He was raised and educated in Portugal, immigrated to the United States in 1959 making his home in Peabody. Tony was employed for 22 years in the Peabody Public Works Water Department until his retirement in 1993. Prior to this he worked for many years in the Peabody leather industry. Tony was a devoted parishioner and sexton at Our Lady of Fatima Church and a pillar in the Portuguese community. In his youth he played soccer, was an avid Celtics and Patriot fan, loved to dance, listening to Elvis music and was a very active member at the Holy Ghost Society. His biggest joy was to attend gatherings and be surrounded by his family and friends. In addition to his wife Delminda, he is survived by 2 sisters, Maria Alves of Ontario Canada, and Maria Das Angustias and her husband Denis Santos of Faial Azores Portugal; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Maria Ramos, Glorinda and Manuel Bettencourt, Manuel and Maria Avila, Antonio and Durvalina Avila all of Peabody, Juvina Aguiar of Portugal, and Alice and Manuel Cunha of Toronto Canada; many devoted nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, godchildren and close friends. He was predeceased by his brother Manuel Sousa. His family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, January 22nd from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His funeral will be held on Monday, January 23rd at 8 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Our of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody.
