Obituary of M. Barbara Carney

M. Barbara Carney, R.N. PEABODY – M. Barbara Carney, R.N., 83, died unexpectedly at her home on Saturday March 11, 2017. Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Kathryn E. Callahan. She grew up in Peabody, and graduated from St. John’s Girls High School in Peabody, Class of 1950. She studied nursing at St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing in Lowell, graduating with the Class of 1953. She furthered her studies at Newton College of the Sacred Heart/Boston College earning a bachelor degree in Guidance Counseling in 1967. She earned Masters in Education from Salem State College in 1972. Ms Carney worked at the former J.B. Thomas Hospital in Peabody in her younger days while in school. She was a Registered Nurse at Union Hospital in Lynn, and served in the same capacity at Lynn Hospital for 20 years. In 1972 she begasn work at the Chelsea Soldiers Home. She held a lead administrator’s position there before retiring in 1992. Ms. Carney is survived by her sister Marguerite Daley of Peabody, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by seven siblings, the late Catherine Carney, John F. Carney, Paul Carney, State Police Capt. Leo Carney, Philip Carney, Rita Odom, and Ann Rutan. Barbara was committed to family and friends throughout her life, and was always extremely supportive of those she loved. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for a visitation on Friday morning from 10 – 11 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM in St. Ann’s Church, Peabody. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
