Obituary of Matthew W. Cooney

Matthew W. Cooney, 38, of Peabody, died Friday June 16th, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Salem, MA on August 21, 1978, the beloved son of William C. and Cheryl A. (Kenney) Cooney. Matthew had resided in Peabody, MA most of his life. He was a graduate of St John’s Parochial School in Peabody and Peabody Veterans Memorial High School in 1996. As a boy Matt participated in many sports including Little League baseball, soccer, and Pop Warner football. Matthew worked as a mason specializing in brownstone restoration in and around Boston for J.W. Masonry Inc. of Foxboro for twelve years where he was well respected by his boss Jay and his coworkers. Matthew was a true, loyal and passionate son, brother, father, companion, uncle, cousin, coworker and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. Matt made friends easily and was always happy to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He was an open and honest man and you always knew what he was thinking. He was a dog lover and always had a loving and loyal black lab at his side. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and had the Cooney coat of arms and a Celtic cross tattooed on him along with many others. Matthew enjoyed fishing, boating and snowmobiling on Lake Hebron in Monson, Maine with family and friends. He was an avid Boston Sports fan especially the Patriots attending and watching the games. He loved riding his Harley motorcycle around the New England area with his good friends Jim and Bobby. Above all else, Matthew’s greatest joy was spending time with his cherished son Jacob. Matthew is survived by his parents of Peabody, his son, Jacob Matthew Cooney and Jacob’s mother Amy Munoz of Beverly, his sister Melissa Bruning, her husband Christopher and their son , his nephew and godson Gavin of Rowley, Ma, his grandfather Robert J. Kenney and Norma of Beverly. Matthew was the loving companion of Kate Fader, her children and family of Peabody with whom he enjoyed many adventures and good times. Matt is survived by many aunts and uncles who were always there to support him, including Kathy, Robin, Brad, Bobby, Mitzi, Michael, Maria, Marianne, Scott, Mary, Jim, Barbara, David and Sandie. He is also survived by many special cousins and friends including longtime buddies Eric and Paul. He was the grandson of the late Priscilla (Norman) Kenney and the late Charles L. and Janet M. (Becker) Cooney. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St. Peabody, MA facility. His funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM from the funeral home followed by a funeral mass at St. John the Baptist Church 16 R Chestnut Street in Peabody at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
