Obituary of James C. "Coach" Stathos

James C. “Coach” Stathos, 90, passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 peacefully at his residence. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Eileen Ann (Gill) Stathos. He was born in Peabody, MA on July 10, 1926, the son of the late Charles and Georgia (Zarakas) Stathos and had resided in Peabody all his life. He entered the US Navy upon graduation from Peabody High School in 1944 and was a veteran of WW II serving on the CASU 27 and also a plane captain with the 4F4 Corsair fighter squadron on the USS Roosevelt. While in sick bay aboard the Roosevelt, he was visited by President Harry S. Truman. Jim had been a former barber in Peabody for many years and later worked for the Peabody Recreation Department for over 25 years retiring as Supervisor of Recreation in 1994. He was a member of the Peabody/Lynn Order of Elks, # 1409, and also a member of the Essex Masonic Lodge of Salem and was past Master and Past Secretary of the Jordan Masonic Lodge in Peabody. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, of Peabody, his two daughters, Kara Stathos-Berry of Danvers and Kelly Stathos of Peabody, his two grandsons, Tyler James Berry and Jackson David Berry both of Danvers, his sisters, Esther Crowell and Anne “Honey” Tsapatsaris both of Peabody. He was the brother of the late Stella Stathas. A Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 9th from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. A Service will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody MA 01960 in his memory.
