Obituary of Marie (Poirier) Bates

Mrs. Marie (Poirier) Bates, 89, of Penacook, NH and formerly of Peabody, Ma, died Sunday evening at the Concord Hospital in Concord after a short illness. She was the wife of the late Leonard J. Bates. She was born in Newton, Ma on September 29, 1916, the daughter of the late Henry and Sophie (Cormier) Poirier and was raised in Waltham graduating from St. Mary’ s High School there. She had resided in Peabody for 43 years before moving to Penacook 3 years ago. While in Peabody she was a member of the St. Adelaide’ s Altar Society and in Waltham, she helped with the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She had been a sales clerk at the former J. J. Newberry Store at the North Shore Shopping Center in Peabody for 15 years and later at Sims Clothing store in Peabody for 4 years prior to her retirement. She enjoyed working with her plants, crocheting and lately being with her family. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Bonnie Bates of West Peabody, a daughter, Sharon Parpart of Penacook, NH, a sister and brother-in-law, Rita and William Kirrane of Waltham, Ma, a granddaughter, Jennifer Ayers and her husband Thomas Sr. of Peabody, 2 great grandchildren, Marie Ayers and Thomas Ayers Jr. both of Peabody and many nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Sean Bates and the sister of the late Joseph, Henry and Ernest Bates. A Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility . Her funeral will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Adelaide’ s Church, West Peabody at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Rd., Bethesda, MD 20814 in her memory.
