Obituary of Charles R "Poppy" Gallant

Charles R “Poppy” Gallant, Sr. 85, of Topsfield and formerly of Salem, died Monday evening at the Brentwood Rehab in Danvers, following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Frances S (Costantino) Gallant with whom he shared over 59 years of marriage. Born in Tewksbury, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Georgiana (Pitre) Gallant. He was raised and educated in Salem and has spent the last 8 years living in Topsfield. Poppy was employed with the city of Salem for over 30 years and worked in various departments for the city and retired from the water department as a meter reader. He enjoyed watching all of Boston professional sports team and was an avid Red Sox fan as well. He was an umpire for the Salem Little League for few years, but his favorite endeavor was spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. Gallant Jr, and his wife Lori Gallant of Manchester, his four beloved grandchildren, Derek and Ryan Bonia, Amy Green, and Rachel Gallant, his son-in-law, Fran Green, his former son-in-law, Ronnie Bonia, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Debby M. Bonia Green and by his seven brothers and four sisters. His funeral will be on Friday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. James Church, Federal St, Salem to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
