Obituary of Irene Diane (Matos) Lopes

Irene Diane (Matos) Lopes, 80, of Peabody, died Tuesday evening in a local nursing home after a short illness. She was the wife of retired Peabody Police officer Albert P. Lopes Jr. She was born in Peabody on January 19, 1926, the daughter of the late Manuel and Lucinda (Prata) Matos and was educated in Peabody schools and was a lifelong resident of the city. She was first employed at the former CBS Hytron Plant in Danvers and later after raising her children, worked in the cafeteria department with the Peabody School System for over 15 years prior to her retirement and enjoyed being with the young children. She had been a member of the Holy Ghost Society and Our Lady of Fatima Church. She loved to cook for and be around her family. Surviving her besides her husband are a son and daughter-in-law, Peabody Police Officer Albert J. Lopes 111 and his wife Donna of Peabody, a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Arlindo Garcia of Danvers, three grandchildren, Lucinda Marie Garcia and Albert J. Lopes IV and Alex Lopes, an aunt , Mrs. Joseph (Hilda) Prata of Peabody , three cousins, Clementina Williams, Maria Silva and Caroline Brown , several sister and brother-in-laws and many nieces and nephews. A Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St., Peabody. Her funeral will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of your choice.
