Obituary of Joseph L. "Joe" Silva

Joseph L. Silva PEABODY – Joseph L. “Joe” Silva, 94, beloved husband of the late Maria (Prata) Silva, died unexpectedly from injuries sustained in a car crash on Friday September 15, 2017 in Peabody. Born in Lowell, he was the son of the late Joseph S. Silva. He grew up in Peabody where he attended the Carroll School and Peabody High School. He enlisted into the United States Navy in which he proudly served during World War II. Mr. Silva was trained in the trades, and became a licensed Plumber. He was a member of the United States Pipefitters Union and worked on many projects around the country. He was employed as a Plumber by the City of Peabody Public Schools for many years. Joe was very active in the Portuguese community and served the City of Peabody well in many activities. He was faithfully devoted in the St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Peabody. He was also a proud member of the Portuguese-American Veterans Post 1 of Peabody. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed watching many sports, from the City of Peabody Little League Baseball teams to the Bruins and Red Sox. You could always find him tinkering around the house that he built. He was an accomplished handy-man. He had an infectious smile, and always greeted the guys as “Hello Lover”, and will be remembered for his kind spirit and willing to help anyone. He will be dearly missed by all who met him. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph L. Silva, Jr. and his wife Alice of Shrewsbury; two grandchildren, Julia and Joseph Silva of Shrewsbury; a sister-in-law Carolyn Brown and her husband John of Peabod; many nieces and nephews and other extended family around the Greater Peabody area. He was the husband of his late first wife Elaine (Croft) Silva and brother of the late Lawrence Silva. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Friday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Peabody. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 – 7 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
