Obituary of Richard Elllis Conway, M.D.
SALEM/WENHAM – Richard Ellis Conway, M.D., of Wenham and Rockport, died peacefully on November 18, 2017 with his family by his side at the age of 86. Richard was raised in Peabody and Salem and practiced medicine as an Orthopaedic Surgeon at North Shore Medical Center—Salem Hospital, J.R. Shaughnessy Hospital and North Shore Children’s Hospital for over thirty years, serving as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Salem Hospital for much of that time. A partner of Salem Orthopaedic Surgeons, Richard was also the founder and director of the North Shore Amputee Clinic which provided free medical services to child amputees. Over the years he served Salem Hospital in many ways, including as Chairman of the Resource Committee and Chairman of the Rehabilitation Committee. He founded the Massachusetts Orthopaedic Association and served as its first President. He also served as a Councillor of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Richard was a graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover and of Harvard University and Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency through the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Training Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston. He served as a Naval Officer, rising to Lieutenant, for three years aboard the USS William C. Lawe Destroyer during the Korean War before beginning medical school. Richard raised his family with his wife Gloria in Wenham. In addition to his dedicated work as a doctor, Richard loved music and played trumpet in dance bands during his high school and college years. He loved the ocean and sailing, horseback riding, nature, science, all animals, and, most of all, his family. He will be deeply missed. Richard is survived by his five children and their spouses, Kathryn and John Brigden of Menlo Park, CA, Richard and Patricia Conway of Miami, FL, Christopher and Laura Conway of Littleton, Daniel and Kerry Conway of Hamilton, and Meghan and Ben Balbale of Weston, along with his grandchildren, Ryan and Claire Brigden, Melissa and Sabrina Conway, Sophia, Colin and Emma Conway, Erica, Marissa and Leah Conway, and Sean, Adam, and Celia Balbale. He was predeceased by his parents Celia (Gilmore) Conway and James Joseph Conway, his former wife Gloria, his brother James Conway and his sister-in-law Eileen Conway. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend his Funeral Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday November 22, 2017 at 10 AM in Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd, Salem followed by burial with Military Honors at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem, followed by a reception. Funeral planned with the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, Peabody.
