Obituary of David J. Hallinan, Esq.

David J. Hallinan, Esquire, 74, of Peabody, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the NSMC Salem Hospital with his family at his side. Dave was born in Peabody on December 13, 1942 son of the late Thomas J. and Georgiana M. (Delpero) Hallinan. Raised in Peabody he graduated from Peabody High School in 1960. As a great Peabody High School football athlete Dave was awarded a full scholarship to UMass Amherst. Following his freshman year, the entire UMass football coaching staff was hired by the University of Cincinnati and David was one of the few whom they made provisions for to have him transferred with them. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from UC and in 1969 his Juris Doctorate from Suffolk Law School. After receiving his Juris Doctorate, he taught pre-law at Northern Essex Community College, served on the Peabody School Committee and held private law practice in Salem with Robert Bowes. Since 1989, David provided truly outstanding leadership to the ECBAA, working more than full-time, with most of that time volunteered, out of his devotion to the cause of excellent representation for indigent clients. David stood as an unrelenting advocate for fairness by the courts to both indigent defendants and also to the lawyers who represented them. When Massachusetts faced the threat of the return of the death penalty, David played a pivotal role in securing the votes to defeat it. An avid student of the latest and most effective training techniques, David arranged the delivery to the ECBAA of the highest level of quantity and quality training to be found in any assigned counsel program. For his achievements David received many accolades, including the CPCS Duggan Award and, most recently, the American Bar Association Harrison Tweed Award, which he accepted on behalf of the ECBAA in NYC. At home David was involved with his children and grandchildren’s many recreational, athletic and educational opportunities. In addition to his wife Brenda with whom he shared 51 years of marriage, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Sean and Bethany Hallinan of Amesbury, Perry Hallinan of Peabody, and Samantha and Mark Jolin of Paxton; his cherished grandchildren, McKenna, Jake and Avery Hallinan, and Maggie and Samuel Jolin, many cousins, co-workers and friends. He was also predeceased by his brother John Hallinan. His family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, November 30th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral home at 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His celebration of life service will be held in the funeral home on Friday, December 1st at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to MGH C/O Development office for the Cardiac Department, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114.
