Obituary of Aurena M. "Renie" Houlden

Aurena M. “Renie” (Tavares) Amaro Houlden, 91, of Danvers, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Renie was born in Peabody, on October 7, 1926 daughter of Aureliano and Mary (Marshall) Tavares. Raised in Peabody she graduated from Peabody High School in 1944 and received an Associate Degree in 1946 from Burdett Secretarial College in Lynn. She resided in Peabody for most of her life, before moving to Danvers in 1999. After raising her son Bruce, she returned to work as a secretary for the Director of Nursing at Salem State College. She also enjoyed working at the House of Seven Gables, and as a docent at Glen Magna. Renie was a person with an investigative mind who loved to explore nature and coastal communities. She also enjoyed gardening and had a special love for antiques. Renie was the predeceased by her son, Bruce W. Amaro in 2014; first husband William Amaro in 1965, and her second husband George Houlden in 1984. Surviving her are her son’s best friend, Richard Kiley of Salem; many cousins and also her friends at the Fairweather Apartments. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 1st at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are invited, followed by the interment of ashes at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
