Obituary of Nicholas "Nick" G. Zantos

Nicholas G. Zantos, 91 PEABODY – Nicholas “Nick” G. Zantos, 91, beloved husband of Margaret (Soutsos) Zantos, died peacefully on Tuesday November 28, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, while in the comforting presence of his family, following a brief illness. Born in Stoneham, Nick was the son of the late George and Kalliope (Soteris) Zantos. He grew up in Malden and graduated from Malden High School. Later he graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from Northeastern University. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was a veteran of both World War II and a reservist during the Korean War. He was stationed on the USS Merrick as a Radar Specialist escorting convoys across the Atlantic looking for German U-Boats along the way. Mr. Zantos worked as a Systems Engineer Manager with Raytheon in Lowell and Bedford, working in the Missile System Division for 33 years, and enjoyed nearly 25 years in retirement. Nick always had a passion for electronics, and built and repaired radios as a young boy/man. He was always working on a project around the house, or fixing cars, and was a talented tradesman. He converted his parent’s large Victorian home in Malden into a three-family to help support his mother, then finished off the 3rd floor of his home for his growing family in Arlington where he lived nearly 30 years. He also built a Summer home in Cotuit on Cape Cod, and later a retirement home in Mashpee. He always kept busy in retirement, building the neighborhood boat dock to benefit his neighbors and the South Cape Beach Association. He enjoyed bowling in a league with St. George’s Church in Centerville, loved boating and fishing for stripers and bluefish with his son George, also digging for clams and golfing with his buddies. Among those interests, his passion and devotion was for his family of whom he cherished, and was proud of their achievements. He will be dearly missed as he made an impact on all he met. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Soutsos) Zantos of Peabody, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage; two daughters and a son, Elaine Borgen Zantos of Concord, Diana Beaupre of Swampscott, and George Zantos of Medford; four granddaughters Margot, Alecia, Jacqueline, and Isabella, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death, besides his parents, by siblings George Zantos, Helen Katsoulakos, and Katherine Keches.
