Obituary of Jane M. Claffey

Jane M. Claffey 88, of Salem, died on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Salem Hospital. Jane was raised in Lynn and graduated from St. Mary’s Girls High School in Lynn and from Emmanuel College Magna Cum Laude receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. She pursued post-graduate studies in chemistry and biology. She worked for 20 years in laboratories at M.I.T. and then began a second career at Salem State University working in the Math Lab. Jane held many roles in the department, mentoring many students with great patience and skill, and continued tutoring at the college until the age of 87. She also enjoyed hiking, camping and traveling. She is survived by her sister Raye Mahoney and her husband Lewis of Peabody, and was predeceased by her parents Charles and Lorena (Kelly) Claffey, and her sister Nancy Kelley in 2015. Jane was the aunt of Nancy Jane Mahoney, Matthew Mahoney, David Kelley, Maureen de Jong and her husband Bill, Pamela Kelley, Kara Corley and her husband Larry, Jane Celli and her husband Frank, and Megan Kelley all of MA, Amy Hynes of FL and Lorena Hart of NH, and great nieces and great nephews. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, December 9th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Church, 140 Lynn St., Peabody.
