Obituary of Portia Karabelas

Portia Karabelas PEABODY Portia Karabelas, 88, died Saturday evening at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home following a long illness. Born in Peabody, she was a lifelong resident of the city. She was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Athena (Maniatakos) Karabelas. She attended Peabody schools and graduated from Peabody High School. Miss Karabelas was employed for 22 years as a Senior Legal Recorder with the Essex County Registrar of Deeds before taking an early retirement. She was an active member of the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody, a member of the Philoptohos Athena, the Daughters of Penelope, the Daughters of Laconia, briefly with the Hawthorne Institute of Salem. Along with her sister, she sold flowers and stuffed animals in front of their Proctor St. home for years. She is survived by: a sister, Doris Stavropoulos of West Roxbury; three nieces and nephews, Mary Kamamis of Great Neck, NY, Peter Stavropoulos of Wayland, and Paul Stavropoulos of West Roxbury; four great-nieces & great-nephews, Melanie Clarke of Berkeley Heights, NJ, Connie Centrella of Colts Neck, NJ, Ana Stavropoulos and Nicholas Stavropoulos, both of Wayland; and a great-great nephew, Michael Centrella of Colts Neck, NJ; a sister-in-law, Pierrette Karabelas of Delray Beach, FL. She was preceded in death by her sister, Irene Karabelas, and brothers Louis, James, and Charles Dino Karabelas. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a visitation on Wednesday starting at 9 AM, followed by a Funeral Service at 10 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St. location, Peabody. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem
