Obituary of Brigid Ann (Nancy) Doherty McIntosh

Brigid Ann (Nancy) Doherty McIntosh, 92 PEABODY -- Brigid Ann (Nancy) Doherty McIntosh died peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on Saturday, January 13, 2018, in the loving presence of her family. Born July 8, 1925 in Casper, Wyoming, she was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Harte Doherty, the second of their five children. Following graduation from high school she attended the University of Wyoming and then worked as a secretary for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. In 1946 she married James Joseph McIntosh, Jr. and moved with him to Beaumont, Texas. Over the course of the next sixteen years, Joe’s work as a civil engineer took them to India for two years, as well as to many different states including Michigan, Wisconsin , California, Indiana, and finally Illinois. In 1965 they settled there in Oak Park and continued to raise their five children. Following the death of her husband Joe in 1966, Nancy went to work as an executive secretary in the Chicago office of Pfizer, Inc. As editor of the Pfizer newsletter she traveled on numerous occasions to company headquarters in New York and enjoyed the many opportunities this work afforded. Retiring from Pfizer after twenty-three years, Nancy continued to live in Oak Park, becoming a dedicated daily walker and serving as president of her condo board. She traveled often to family reunions and to visit her grandchildren in Texas and New England. A skilled seamstress and avid reader throughout her life, she enjoyed having increased time for both in retirement. In 2008 Nancy moved to Peabody, MA. She counted herself very fortunate for the friendships she found there following this last move. When near the shore she sometimes recalled the Little Maid books that helped inspire her desire for travel and adventure, especially the “Little Maid of Gloucester,” which she read as a child in Wyoming. Nancy is survived by her three daughters and two sons: Kathleen McIntosh of New Haven, CT and her husband James Curry; Kerry Thompson of Melrose, MA and her husband William Thompson; Sheila McIntosh of Needham, MA and her husband Daniel Soyer; Paul McIntosh of Dallas, TX and his wife Ellen McIntosh; and Kevin McIntosh of Somerville, MA and his wife Karin Case. Her eleven grandchildren are Patrick, Serena and Gretchen Curry, Ian Rose and Grace Thompson, James and Simcha McIntosh, Molly and Brennan McIntosh-Case, and Elena and Leah Soyer; her four great-grandchildren are Will and Maya Curry and Bodhi and Inara Rose. She is survived also by her sister Cecelia Doherty Gray of Casper, WY. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service and celebration of Nancy’s life at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 20 in Brooksby Village Chapel.
