Obituary of James J. "Papa" MacGilvray Jr.
James J. Papa MacGilvray Jr., 71, of Peabody, May 22, died Monday at the Salem Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. MacGilvray was born on December 9, 1934 in Medford son of Mary D. (Bowman) MacGilvray of Medford and the late James J. MacGilvray. He was raised and received his education at St. Clement High School in Medford and the Mass Trade School Shop. He served in the U.S. Army as a SP4 from 1957 to 1959 and was recalled to active duty in 1961 until being honorably discharged 1962. He moved to Peabody in 1966.
Mr. MacGilvray was employed for many years as a superintendent of buildings at the Katherine Gibbs School, Boston. He was then employed in the same capacity for Cohen Properties of Boston until his retirement in 1996. He enjoyed fishing, dancing and traveling.
In addition to his mother of Medford, he is survived by his wife, Utta A. Herrmann-MacGilvray of Gloucester; his children and their spouses, Deborah A. Driscoll, Paula J. and Thomas Moyers all of Derry NH, Tracy E. Kemp, David J. MacGilvray both of Peabody, Lisa M. and Gilberto Perez Sr., James J. MacGilvray III all of Danvers and Christopher E. and Eryn MacGilvray of So. Portland, ME; grandfather of Christopher, Nicholas, Benjamin, Katherine Mary, Amy, Alaina, Jordan, Olivia, Sofia, Gilberto Jr., Michael, Kyle, Kara, Christopher, Honor and Hope; great grandfather of Aiden; brother and brother-in-law of Joan and Jerry Shannon of Taunton, uncle to 3 nieces and 2 nephews.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody facility followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Richard Church, Danvers. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Please note: Visiting hours are Wednesday 4 to 8 p.m. Burial at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the North Shore Hospice, 10 Elm Street, Danvers, MA 01923.
