Obituary of Peter Epaminondas K. Hantzopoulos
Peter K. Hantzopoulos PEABODY – Peter (Epaminondas) K. Hantzopoulos, age 91, died early Wednesday morning comfortably in his home, following a brief illness and a fulfilled life, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Oichalia, Greece, to Kostantinos and Paraskevi (Mihou) Hantzopoulos, young Epaminondas experienced tremendous hardship due to poverty, war, and civil conflict and was unable to receive an education past fourth grade. He worked from a very young age and his desire for a better life led him first to Athens, where he learned shoemaking as well as cabinet making. In November 1954, he boarded the SS Atlantic for the United States. Upon receiving his United States citizenship, he officially became Peter Hantzopoulos and eventually settled in Peabody. He first worked making electron and semi-conductor tubes as well as in a leather factory while attending night school to learn English. Soon after, he founded his custom cabinet making business, North Shore Cabinet Shop. He operated the business successfully for over 55 years in downtown Peabody, working well into his late eighties, and was recognized as a gifted cabinet maker. He is survived by his beloved wife, Chrisoula (Sfikas), with whom he shared 55 years of marriage; a son Constantine (Chuck) Hantzopoulos of San Francisco; daughters Paraskeve (Evie) Hantzopoulos and her husband David Motamed of New York City; Elaine Zolotas and her husband Michael Zolotas of Peabody; Antonia (Toni) Hantzopoulos and her husband Blake Rickerson of Peabody; Maria Hantzopoulos and her husband Johnny Farraj of New York City; grandchildren Casey Landry and her wife Stephanie Aresta-Da Silva, Stefanie Libby, Chrisoula, Artemis and Nepheli Motamed, and Dalia and Ziyad Farraj. He is also survived by a brother John Hantzopoulos of Peabody and sisters Barbara Stamos of Nahant; Lana Voris of Peabody; Despina Binios of Melbourne, Australia; Niki Nikolouzos of Peabody; Sofia Stavropoulos of Athens, Greece, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his brother Antonis Hantzopoulos of Melbourne, Australia.
