Obituary of Sr. Kathleen Eleanor Horton, SNDdeN

Sister Kathleen Eleanor Horton, SNDdeN, formerly Sr. Mary Frederick, SNDdeN died at Notre Dame Residential Care Center in Ipswich on March 16 after a brief illness. Sr. Kathleen was born on August 8, 1929, the daughter of Mary Ursula Hickey and Frederick Horton. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Patricia Ruane, of Hingham and her niece Beth Griffin of Marshfield. Five siblings predeceased Sr. Kathleen: Frederick, Joseph, Paul, Richard and Claire Williams. Sr. Kathleen attended St. Gregory High School in Dorchester and entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in Waltham on February 2, 1949. She professed her first vows on July 30, 1951 and her final vows on July 30, 1956. She earned a bachelors’ degree in History and Education from Emmanuel College and a Teachers Certificate from Boston State Teachers College. Sr. Kathleen taught grades 1 – 8 over a period of forty years in Woburn, Brighton, Roxbury, South Boston, Needham, Cambridge, Dorchester and Lawrence Parochial Schools. In her later years, she served as a school librarian. She came to Ipswich in 1996 to work in the fiancé office and retired there in 2000. In her retirement years, Sr. Kathleen had more time to read, a pastime that brought her great delight. She learned the reading tastes of the Sisters she lived with and was tireless in providing them with wonderful choices of books. She was a caring and generous woman who consistently responded to the needs of others. She will be greatly missed among her Sisters at Ipswich. Sister Kathleen’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday from Our Lady Queen Chapel at 30 Jeffreys Neck Road Ipswich at 3:00 PM. Her family and her Notre Dame community will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, with a Prayer Service at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow the Mass.
