Obituary of Henry J. "Ray" Manning
Henry J. “Ray” Manning, 90, of Peabody, husband of Florence A. “Flo” (Lareau) Manning, passed away at MGH Boston Hospital on Monday, March 19, 2018. Ray was born in Peabody on March 21, 1927 son of Henry A. and Helen A. (McHugh) Manning. Raised and educated in Peabody, he was a lifelong resident of the city. In 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with the Seabees as a Seaman First Class and was honorably discharged in 1946. Ray began his working career in 1946 at Eastman Gelatine Corporation in Peabody and retired as a manager in 1986, a position which he held for many years. He dedicated his life caring for his family and later was so proud to support his grandchildren and great grandchildren with their scholastic endeavors and recreational activities. As a hobby he enjoyed golfing and was a member at the Old Newbury Golf Club, and he and his wife also traveled extensively. Ray loved to boat with his family and was a member of the Danversport Yacht Club. In addition to his wife Flo with whom he shared 65 years of marriage, he is survived by 2 sons and their spouses, Peabody Fire Department Lt. Mark H. Manning and Eleanor “El” Manning of Peabody, and Michael E. and Ellen Manning of Byfield; his cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth Manning and her fiancée Eric Cronin, Mary Barnhart and her husband Jeffery, Jameson Manning and Finnegan Manning, 2 great grandchildren, Henry John Barnhart and Ellie Alice Barnhart; also 3 nephews and 2 nieces, Richard Carlson, Mary Ellen Manning, Robert Manning, John Manning and Anne Manning-Martin. His family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, March 22nd from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His funeral will be held from the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 23rd followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Peabody. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. The family requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Pediatric Hematology & Oncology, Massachusetts General Hospital, 55 Fruit Street, Yawkey 8B, Boston, MA 02114 or Gifts to the MGH Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology in memory of Mr. Manning may be made at http://www.massgeneral.org/children/give/give_to_mghfc.aspx .
