Obituary of James P. Nally

James P. Nally, 86, of Salem and formerly of Peabody, died Tuesday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Elaine J. (Cormier) Nally with whom he shared over 61 years of marriage. Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Richard J. and Anna F. (McGivern) Nally and step-son of the late Margaret (Roach) Nally. He was raised and educated in Peabody and was a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1950. He has lived in Salem for the past 20 years. Jim was in sales for most of his working career and retired from Casey & Hayes Moving Storage Company in Salem many years ago. Jim was a member of the City of Peabody Appeals Board for years, as well as a commissioner on the Peabody Electric Light Board. He was a sports enthusiast, playing varsity football at Peabody High School, Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH, and at Tyler Jr. College in Tyler, Texas after his stint in the US Army during the Korean War. Later, he was a high school football referee, and worked many Peabody High football games in the early years, he later operated the score board at Peabody high school home football games after his refereeing days were over. Jim belonged to several candlepin bowling leagues over the years and enjoyed the game as well as the friendships that resulted. He loved watching all types of sports and took pride in watching his children and grandchildren participate in their various sports activities over the years. Jim and his beloved wife Elaine travelled extensively over the years, and after they both retired, they enjoyed spending winters in Florida where he worked on his golf game. While a member of the Wenham Country Club he actually had three holes in one. Mom and Dad had many close friends with whom they shared great times and good laughs. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his 2 sons, Thomas J. and his wife Tara Nally of Salem, and James M. Nally of Danvers, his two daughters, Janet Nally Barnes and her husband Brian Barnes of Boxford, and Christine E. and her husband Raymond C. Tilden, Jr, of Greenland, NH, his grandchildren, Raymond C. Tilden, III, Jennifer Tilden and Shaela and Tess Nally, his sister Ann Marie Johnson of Norwalk, Ct and his step-siblings, Sister Ann Dominic Roach, and Richard and James Roach and is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends, including his dear friend Frederick Murtagh of Peabody. He was predeceased by his brother Richard J. Nally, Jr. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30 AM at St. John’s Church, Peabody. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
