Obituary of Edward Leo Jamieson

Edward Leo Jamieson, 88, of Peabody, MA, died on April 18. He was the beloved husband of Ann Booth Jamieson with whom he shared over 57 years of marriage. Born in Boston on September 18, 1929, he was the son of the late Leo and Estelle Mullen Jamieson. He graduated from Boston University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. Edward’s career started as a reporter and feature writer for the Medford Daily Mercury. In 1955 Edward moved to Manhattan NY and began work with TIME magazine as Contributing Editor where he met his wife Ann. Edward rose through the editorial ranks reaching the post of Executive Editor, which he held longer than anyone since Time founder Henry Luce. Known for acute journalistic reflexes, affection for the language and a sense of humor that should be patented, Edward wrote for all 25 sections of TIME and often served as assigned or sit-in editor for most of them. In his tenure he wrote 25 cover stories and instructed several generations of writers and editors in the fine art of TIME writing. Following his retirement from TIME, Edward was invited to serve as an editor and editorial advisor for America, the Jesuit weekly review of news and opinion. He served there for several years. For the next quarter century Edward and Ann split their time between East Orleans on Cape Cod and New York. In 2013 they left both New York and Cape Cod for Brooksby Village in Peabody to be closer to relatives and friends. Besides his beloved wife, he is survived by his sister Thelma Jamieson McCulloch of Reading, and his six nieces and nephews, Jane and her husband Scott McGrath, Susan Smith, Teresa Poellot, Ann McCulloch, Sharon Harrison, and David McCulloch. He was predeceased by his sister Jane Jamieson. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday April 21 at St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. A Private interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery Medford at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St, Danvers, MA 01923.
