Obituary of George G. "Shine" Shahnaian

George Shahnaian passed after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren. Born and raised in Peabody, George was the son of the late Garabed (“Charlie”) and Haiganoush (“Emma”) Shahnaian. He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Shahnaian, and is survived by his former wife of thirty-eight years, Barbara (Karavedas) Shahnaian, and their three children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Daughters Sophia Hennessey and husband Joseph, and Pamela Hutchison and husband Richard, reside in Lynnfield; son Charles Shahnaian and wife Elena, live in Los Angeles. George was a proud, loving, and incredibly funny grandfather to Athene Yagjian, Tanner Hutchison, Kara Hutchison, Joseph Hennessey, George Hennessey, and Evangeline Shahnaian, as well as great-grandfather to Cole and Satenik Yagjian. “Shine”, as he was known to his friends, was a resident of Peabody for eighty-five years, living in Lynnfield with his daughter Pam for the last seven – though he stubbornly kept a PO Box in his hometown until very recently. George was scheduled to graduate Peabody High in 1943, but his graduation was put on hold for three years while he served with the US Army’s 415th Infantry in Italy, France and Belgium during World War II. He was injured on the battlefield and received the Purple Heart for his courageous service. His career was linked closely to the city he loved so much; he worked for the City of Peabody in several capacities, including several years at the Peabody Water Department, finally retiring from public service in 1990 as the Inspector of Weights and Measures. His family and friends will receive relatives and friends on Friday, April 27th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at 82 Lynn St., Peabody, MA.
