Obituary of Donald F McCauley
Donald F. McCauley, 79, of Peabody, died early Friday morning at the Salem Hospital following a long illness. He was the beloved and adored husband of Lucille (Scarfo) McCauley for the past 18 years and for thirty years was the husband of the late Katherine (Rabchenuk) McCauley.
Born and raised in Peabody, he was the son of the late Felix and Josephine (O’ Neill) McCauley. He was a life long resident of Peabody and a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1943.
After High School, he enlisted with the United States Navy and served aboard the USS INCH during World War II, and later reenlisted and served with the United States Marines during the Korean War until his discharge in 1951. He was the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation, presented by the Korean President at that time.
In 1951 he started with the city of Peabody Fire Department and in 1971 was promoted to Captain and in 1985 was Deputy Chief until his retirement in 1987. He served as Civil Defense for the city of Peabody for over 20 years and was a member of the National Civil Defense Council as a Massachusetts State Representative for 10 years.
He was a member of local 925 AFL CIO and a life member of the B.P.O.E. Elks, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Div 11 and the Veteran of Foreign Wars, all in Peabody. He also enjoyed photography, the ocean, and sailing
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donnie McCauley of Ipswich and David and Gail McCauley of Peabody; a daughter, Maureen McCauley of Reading; a sister, Ruth Silva of Peabody; three stepchildren, Robert and his wife Natalie Gallo of N. Reading, Doreen and her husband Liam Blaisdell of Peabody and Cheryl and her husband, Benjamin Leon of Revere; 9 grandchildren, Brandon, Dustin, Aaron, Naiomi, Andre, Nicolas, Ariana, Mia, and Domenic, and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home,12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John’ s Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Monday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
