Obituary of James "Ed" Hughes, Jr.

James E. “Ed” Hughes, Jr., 92 PEABODY – James E. “Ed” Hughes, Jr., 92, beloved husband of Helen (Hayden) Hughes, died peacefully on Tuesday May 1, 2018 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, while in the comforting presence of his family. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late James E. and Gertrude (McDonough) Hughes, Sr. He grew up in Lynn where he attended schools and graduated from Lynn Classical High School. He later attended Northeastern University. Ed worked as an Engineer and Metallurgist with General Electric in Lynn, where he collaborated in developing and building the Stealth Fighter among his projects. Ed enjoyed quiet pursuits and outdoor endeavors like fishing or golf. He was most comfortable as an avid sports fan watching baseball, the Red Sox and Celtics at home with family. He is survived by his wife Helen (Hayden) Hughes of Peabody, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage; a son and two daughters, Jim Hughes and his wife Sue of Peabody, Robin Quirk and her husband Frank of Peabody and Donna Ruccolo of Topsfield; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Friday May 4, 2018 at 11 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 12 Noon in St. Ann’s Church, Peabody. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 – 7 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
