Obituary of Harriet W. McCuen

Harriet W (Wilcox) McCuen, 95, of Peabody, MA and formerly of Hampton, NY and Harwich, MA, died Saturday, April 28 at the Continuing Care at Brooksby Village following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late B. Woodard (Woody) McCuen. Born in Stockbridge, VT, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Josie (Mills) Wilcox. Harriet was a graduate of Whitcomb High School in Bethel, VT, class of 1941. She continued her education at Castleton State College in Vermont and received her Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1945. She later received her Master’s Degree from Boston University in 1954. Harriet lived in Hampton, NY for many years before moving to Harwich, MA. She spent the last 18 years living in Peabody, MA. Harriet began her 40-year career in education teaching at the elementary level in Vermont and as a reading consultant in South Hadley, MA. She continued her career at Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT where she spent 27 years. Harriet was Professor of Education and Chairperson of the Education Department at Green Mountain before retiring in 1985. She was a past president of Delta Kappa Gamma chapter in Rutland, VT. In Harwich, she was active in the First Congregational Church where she served on the Mission Board, as president of the Ladies Benevolent Society and as a Sunday school teacher. Harriet was one of the founding members of Harwich Ecumenical Council for the Homeless. Harriet is survived by her sister, Helen W. Stearns of Beverly, MA, her niece, Delphine (Del) Skillins of Danvers, MA, her nephew, Kermit Smith of Christiansburg, VA, several grandnephews, grandnieces, great grandnephews, great grandnieces, and cousins. Following cremation, her funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 12 at 11:00AM at Brooksby Village Chapel, 300 Brooksby Village Dr, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Harwich Ecumenical Council for the Homeless, P.O. Box 638, West Harwich, MA 02671. Arrangements were made by the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, Peabody.
