My first assignment with DSS was at the Boston Field Office, it was also my best assignment with DSS. A big reason for why that assignment was my best was serving with Joe. Being a new agent, I had a lot to learn and Joe was always available to lend me a helping hand or provide guidance on many matters. I appreciated his in-depth knowledge on law enforcement matters and grateful for all that he taught me, which, in turn, helped me become a better agent. I also know that Joe efforts helped make DSS the great agency that it is today. I am sad to hear of Joe's passing and would like to pass my heartfelt condolences to Joe's family. God bless. -John Milkiewicz of Holyoke, MA

I recall 1989 very well. I spent a semester abroad in London while attending Drew University. I had already determined that a career in law enforcement was my calling and thought, how can I become a Federal Agent and live overseas? That summer, my neighbor mentioned a friend of her's " had a son who has a cool job with the State department or something like that...." and soon set up a meeting between Joe and I. I met with him in the Boston Field Office. He educated me on what Diplomatic Security was, and what the career and sacrifices were in store for the life of a DS Agent. 28 years later, here I sit as the RSO in Guatemala with many adventures and amazing stories to tell. The best of which - is I met my wife while serving in Colombia and now have two girls - growing fast. I'm not sure if Joe would remember me or his encouragement but thanks Joe for setting me on the path to where I am today. Godspeed.

I had the great pleasure of getting to know Joe when we were both new Special Agents at the Boston Field Office. Joe was a very kind and caring person. Over the last day or two some many great memories of Joe have coming rushing back. To the Leary family, please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathy to the Leary family. Josef was a very fine and wonderful young man. I always liked him so much. I use to see him when he would visit his father at the courthouse. He surely will be missed. May he rest in peace. God bless him.

Wishing my aunt and cousins healing on the loss of her son and their brother. My dearest first cousin Joseph was a brilliant attorney and public servant. I fondly remember all the many breakfasts we had at my Aunt's home over French toast, eggs and bacon he told stories of many of his world travel experiences and his wonderful extended family. Rest in arms of the lord...

Joe was a friend from our early days in DS. I had the opportunity to get to know him well on the many trips we took supporting the Secretary and then in RSO school. He was, and remained, passionate about his family and friends, dedicated to his nation's service, a gentleman and kind to all. I honestly can't recall Joe saying anything negative, even after he became ill. I can remember the last time that Joe and I spoke and even though deep into the effects of MS, he was positive and upbeat. Joe's life is one we should note was marked by an unusual depth of dignity and courage. Rest in peace my friend and I pray God's tender mercy on all Joe has left behind.

My memories of Joe were born through my working temporarily on the Secretary of State Protective Detail. Joe provided leadership for this (then) new agent and quickly gained my respect. I mirror my former colleagues' comments that Joe always presented a positive example and was someone to look up to. My condolence to his family. Grieve your loss then remember the pleasant times with Joe.

I welcomed Joe to the Boston Field Office of the Diplomatic Security Service when he was a new agent! He was an intelligent, curious and energetic agent. I have not seen him in over 25 years but that doesn't lesson the heartache of his passing. My sincere condolences to his family.
