Obituary of Ernest Arthur Denis
Ernest Arthur Denis, 79, of Peabody and formerly of Salem, entered into eternal rest on June 4, 2006 after a courageous 10 year battle with cancer. He was the devoted husband of Barbara (Linehan) Denis with whom he shared over 54 years of marriage.
Born in Concord, NH, he was the son of the late Arthur and Eva (Dube) Denis. He was educated in Salem and had lived in Peabody for many years.
At 17, he enlisted with the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he fought in six campaigns including the invasion of Normandy, the Pacific before Hiroshima, and later witnessed the signing of the Surrender of Japan. He was a plank owner of the USS Quincy, which took President Roosevelt and Churchill to the Malta Conference.
He was later employed at the Atwood and Morrill Company in Salem for 38 years, holding many positions, including repairing valves in Nuclear Power Plants. He also held a 3rd class Stream Engineers License.
He was an amateur photographer all of his life and was proud of the many awards he won. At 50, he started riding a bicycle and logged over 2000 miles each summer and participated in many endurance races. At 69, he became a self taught computer expert and enjoyed introducing seniors at the Torigian Life Center to the computer world. He made many friends out in the computer world from all over the country and attended many conferences with them.
His family was his life and he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Gale Denis of Newburyport, his two daughters and sons-in-law, Maryann and Gerry McFarland of Nashua, NH and Patricia and Michael Greenwood of Raymond, NH, two brothers and a sister-in-law, Edward and Lois Denis of Marblehead, and Laurent Denis of Miramar, Fla., two sisters-in-law, Grace Jameson of Peabody and Anna May Mullane of McLean, VA., 6 grandchildren, Jonathan Denis, Amy and her husband, Jeff Linke, Laura and Ryan McFarland, Matthew and Corey Jackson and Emily and Jack Greenwood, and many nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 8:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM in Ste. Anne’ s Church, Salem, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. The Celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
