Obituary of Helen Joann Smith
Helen Joann (Simpson) Smith, 89, of Peabody and formerly of Somerville and Wakefield, died Peacefully on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at the Care One facility with her family at her side. She was the devoted wife of the late Melbourne “Smitty” Smith. Born and raised in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Elise (Shirley) Simpson. Helen was a longtime resident of Peabody and was an employee of the City of Peabody for many years, first with the Recreation Department and following a brief retirement worked at the West Branch Library. She was a life-long Red Sox fan, through good years and bad. She loved being at Fenway Park. “There’s nothing like being there”, she would often say. Prior to Smitty’s passing, they were avid travelers and enjoyed trips all over the Unites States and cruises to Bermuda. She especially enjoyed York, Maine and her beloved campground Beach in North Eastham, where she spent many summers with her extended family. Helen was a member of the West Congregational Church where she was devoted to her faith. She also enjoyed the West Branch Library book club and playing mahjong with friends and time spent at the Lynnfield Senior Center. She is survived by her children, Bonnie and her husband John Carroll, David and his wife Kathleen Smith and Donald and his wife Sherry all of Peabody. She was the best Grammy in the world to John Henry, Daniel, Cameron, Sydney, Gina and Nick. She also leaves her sister, Nancy DeMeo of North Andover and many nieces, nephews and their children, She was the sister of the late Shirley Gaudette and the beloved Aunt of the late Janis MacKay of Wakefield. Helen was a friend to many and her family would like thank her much beloved friends, Donna, Debbie and Carolyn for their kindness. She will be missed by those who know and loved her. Helen’s family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the entire staff of Care One at Peabody for their professional, compassionate and kind care to Helen in her final months. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. Her funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Haven from Hunger, 71 Wallis St., Peabody MA 01960 in her memory.
