Obituary of Joseph D. Delaney

PEABODY—Joseph D. Delaney, 81, beloved husband of Dolores (Young) Delaney, died unexpectedly at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center Hospital in Burlington following a brief illness. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Dennis and Margaret (Fitzpatrick) Delaney. He lived in Lynn in his youth and attended schools there. He graduated from St. Mary’s Boys High School, Class of 1942, attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, and following the war, graduated from Babson College in Wellesley, Class of 1949 with a degree in Economics. Mr. Delaney was a veteran of World War II, with service in the United States Navy. He was employed with General Electric in Lynn as a Cost Accountant for many years. Mr. Delaney was a very actively involved in the Peabody community. He served as a Trustee for the J.B. Thomas Hospital for 14 years, ending several years as Chairperson; was a member of the City of Peabody Licensing Board for 13 years, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Leo Council 508 in Peabody. As part of his devotion and faith, was also very active at his parish, St. Ann’s Church in South Peabody, where he served as a Lector, member of the Finance Committee, and attended daily Mass. He helped to start, then manage the St. Ann’s Bowling League on Monday nights at Metro Bowl, now directed by his son Jim, and earnestly believed in giving back to the community, family values, and to each other. He was also an avid sports fan, following the Celtics with his favorite Bob Cousy, and especially baseball and the Red Sox. He is survived by; his wife, Dolores (Young) Delaney of Peabody; one son and daughter-in-law, James J. & Dawn M. Delaney of Lynnfield; three daughters and a son-in-law, Susan M. Delaney of Medford, Mary-Jo E. Delaney of Nice, France, and Patricia A.and Steven Catanese of Medfield; five grandchildren, Michael, Andrew, Kyle, Devin, and Ava Rose; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur & Muriel Delaney of Danvers, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Francis H. Delaney who served several parishes on the North Shore. His funeral will be held on Monday at 10 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, new 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM in St. Ann’s Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 3 to 7 P.M. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemtery, Peabody.
