Obituary of David James Schrader

David James Schrader, 60, of Salem, MA died unexpectedly Sunday morning, August 26, 2018 at his residence. He was a longtime resident of Salem, MA, the son of Frances (Chalifour) Schrader and the late Herbert Schrader. Retired sergeant at Essex County Sheriff’s Department, self-acclaimed Toughest Guy at the Jail, he was loved and respected by all. The Sheriff’s Department was his second family and one which he never faltered from entertaining with his infamous comic relief. Dave was truly a gentle giant with a heart of gold, who loved his family and friends with fierce loyalty. His genuine caring demeanor and infectious smile made him fast friends with anyone he encountered. Always a champion for the under dog, he would never back down from a challenge and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for those in need. A devoted football fan, he loved the Patriots and was never above making a little wager. Shocking to most was his unrelenting love for the New York Yankees, but even this love was no match for his grandchildren, evident by the Red Sox “tattoo” he allowed them to decorate his arm with. Most of all, Dave loved his beloved mother, his children, grandchildren, his dog Max and his many lifelong friends and family. Besides his beloved mother Frances of Salem, David is survived by his children and their spouses, Amy and Adam Blanchard of Wenham, David Jr. and Kerri Schrader of Massapequa Park , NY, Samantha and Ryan Shea of Salem, MA and Patrick and Olivia Schrader of Hanover, MD; his seven precious grandchildren, Ashley, Adam, Amanda, Andrew and Cameron Blanchard and Faith and Austin Schrader; his former wife Danette (Conway) Schrader and her son Colin, and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Kathleen Santos. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 until 8pm at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn Street, Peabody, MA. His funeral will be held on Friday at 10AM from the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Peabody/Salem line at 11AM. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem, MA. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you participate in a random act of kindness in Dave’s honor.
