Obituary of Phyllis L. (Horgan) Smith

Phyllis L. (Horgan) Smith, 97, of Peabody, died peacefully on Thursday, September 6th at the Beverly Hospital with her family by her side. She was the cherished wife of the late Walter M. Smith who was her next-door sweetheart growing up and married in 1947. She was born in Everett, MA on August 6, 1921, the daughter of the late Dennis and Margaret (Woods) Horgan and was raised there before moving to Peabody. Phyllis was a veteran of WW 11 serving in the US Coast Guard from 1943 until her discharge in 1946. She then became a telephone operator with the AT & T Co., Boston for 7 years. She later worked at the former J.B. Thomas Hospital in Peabody first as a switch board operator and later an assistant secretary to the Director of Nurses for 19 years before retiring in 1991. She was a parishioner at St. John the Baptist Church in Peabody and loved listening to music. She had a very positive way of bringing a smile that would light up a room and loved watching her children and grandchildren in their activities. The family is grateful for all the support and comfort given to them by North Shore Elder Services of Danvers. Phyllis is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn L. Caruso and her husband Richard of Andover, Denise F. Raphael of Peabody and Cynthia L Stewart and her husband Sam of Palm Harbor Florida, her brother that was close to her, Richard Horgan of Everett and her late sister Shirley Clooney. She also leaves her precious grandchildren, Kayla and her husband Christian Hayes, John, Luke and Chad Raphael, Ricky Caruso, Bethany Caruso and her husband Matt Freeman, the late Gary Caruso and Samantha Rivers; her three great grandchildren, Cooper Hayes, and Hannalore and Olin Freeman and a cousin Marilyn Spayne and many beloved friends A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 until 5:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. Her funeral will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM from the Funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass in ST. John the Baptist Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM.
