Obituary of Leonard Alexander
Leonard Alexander, 80, of Peabody, died Thursday evening at the Hunt Retirement Center in Danvers after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Shirley Jane (Robinson) Alexander who died this past January and with whom he had shared 52 years of marriage.
He was born in Peabody on November 27, 1925, the son of the late Joseph and Alli M. (Penttila) Alexander and was a graduate of Peabody High School in the class of 1943. He then entered the Service in the US Army during WW 11 and saw action in the Rhineland Campaign and Central Europe before his discharge in 1946.
Upon his return, he joined his father in the Hardware store of Allyn Hardware and later operated it with his partner Richard Lynch for over 40 years until his retirement in 1987.
He had been a director at the former Warren Five Savings Bank for over 17 years and was also a member of the Peabody Chamber of Commerce. He had been a member of the Peabody Lions Club and the Peabody Lodge of Elks # 1409. He also belonged to the VFW Post 1011 and the D.A.V Chapter 100 both of Peabody and was a member of the WW 11 76th Infantry Division.
He enjoyed playing cribbage, camping and wearing funny t-shirts. Following his retirement, he resided in Arcadia, Florida for 18 years before returning to Peabody.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Doreen Alexander of Henderson, NV and Arthur and Rio Alexander of Ashuelot, NH, three daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Robert Grassi of Painted Post, NY, Patience and Joseph Terrizzi of Warwick, R.I., and Abby and Michael Powers of Peabody, 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joyce Tkachuk and Mary J. Nelson.
A visitation will be held on Monday from
5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the new 82 Lynn St.,Peabody facility. Funeral Services will be held there on Tuesday at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Parkinson Disease Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, Fl. 33136 in his memory.
