Obituary of John T. "Jack" Scanlan
John T. “Jack” Scanlan, 67, of Salem, died Saturday morning at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Janet (Bovio) Scanlan with whom he shared over 44 years of marriage. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late John C and Dorothy (Joyce) Scanlan. He was a lifelong resident of Salem and a graduate of Salem High School, class of 1969. Shortly after high school, Jack became an assistant golf pro at Oakley Country Club before he enlisted with the United States Navy where he served for four years during the Vietnam War before his honorable discharge in March of 1976. Following his military service, Jack was employed with the United States Government as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service in Peabody for many years, and served as union President as well. He then continued working for the Massachusetts Highway Department as an Engineer Aide II before he retired. Jack was an avid golfer and was on the Salem High Golf Team for three years, serving as Co-Captain in 1969, and was elected a member of the league all-star team. Jack was a member of the A.O.H Division 18 in Salem for many years. He also enjoyed cooking, watching sports on TV, especially his beloved Yankees and spending time going to the lake house in Sanford, Maine. Besides his beloved wife of 44 years, he is survived by his son, Sean Scanlan of Boston, his twin brothers, Patrick and his wife Patricia of Salem, James of Peabody, his twin sons Patrick and Matthew, and is also survived by his beloved extended Bovio Family, Gail Bovio, Stephen and Ann Marie Comora, Joe and Elaine Penney, Tom and Tina McCarthy, James Bovio, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Robert Bovio. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody and his Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Multiple Sclerosis Society, 101 A First Ave, Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451-1115.
