Obituary of George Panagopoulos

George Panagopoulos, 75, of Peabody, died unexpectedly Friday evening at his home. He was the loving husband of Jacqueline (Thibeault) Panagopoulos with whom he shared over 48 years of marriage. Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Kleomenis and Stavroula (Fragakis) Panagopoulos. He was a life long resident of the city, attended Peabody Public Schools and was a graduate of Peabody High School in 1946. After high school, he entered into the United States Army and served during World War II and the Korean War before being discharged from the Army in 1951. In 1952 he began working as a patrolman for the City of Peabody’ s Police Department, a career that lasted for over thirty-two years until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement, he was elected and served for three consecutive terms as the Electric Light Commissioner for Peabody Municipal Light Plant from 1986 until 2004. He also was a founder member of the Peabody Municipal Retirement and Pension Board, and was on the Peabody Police Relief Association Board. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Carolyn Panagopoulos of Burlington; a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Troy Gooding of Madison, VA; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Lorraine Panagopoulos of Crestview Hills, KY; a cousin, Mary Panagopolis of Peabody; and is also survived by two grandchildren, William and Michael Gooding of Madison, Va. His Funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility, followed by Services in St. Vasilios Church, Peabody at 10:00 AM to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the D.A.V., P.O. Box 145447, Cincinnati, OH, 45850-5447.
