Obituary of John Skouras

John Skouras, 85, of Peabody, died unexpectedly early Tuesday morning at the Union Hospital in Lynn following a long illness. He was the devoted husband of Rita (Panoupolos) Skouras with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage. Born in Kalamata, Greece, he was the son of the late Photios and Panagiota (Giannopoulou) Skouras. He was raised and educated in Athens Greece served in the Greek Navy Merchant Marine for many years before immigrating to the United States in 1958 where he has been a resident of Peabody ever since. While living in Peabody he started his own painting company and later opened his restaurant the Peabody Coffee House on Walnut St where he and his wife operated for many years before they retired. John enjoyed cooking and Greek life, visiting Greece and loved Greek music. He also enjoyed refereeing youth soccer games as well. His favorite endeavor though was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and sharing in all of their activities. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law William and Karen Skouras of Peabody, his daughters and sons-in-law, Pauline and Christos Moraitis of Peabody and Maria and Robert Cameron of CO, his brother, Andreas Skouras of Brooklyn, NY and by his beloved four grandchildren, Dimitrios and Yanni Moraitis and Stephanie and John Skouras, all of Peabody. He was predeceased by his siblings, Christos and Dimitrios Skouras and Maria Rizzos. His funeral will be held on Friday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody followed by his Funeral Service at 10:00 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
