Obituary of Theodore Metropolis

Theodore Metropolis, 84, of Peabody, died Monday at the Pilgrim House Nursing Center, Peabody after a long illness. He was the husband of Georgia (Mason) Metropolis with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. He was born in Peabody on March 10, 1922, the son of the late Andrew and Bessie (Pantgis) Metropolis and had resided here all his life. He was a graduate of Peabody High School in 1939. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 serving for 3 years in the Gilbert Island operation, the Marshall Island and the Solomon Island operations in the Pacific theatre prior to his discharge as a corporal in November 1945. Following his discharge, he continued to work at the former Kirstein Leather Company in Peabody for 15 years. He then started the Prim Cleansers in Peabody in 1960 with 3 locations and worked for 26 years until his retirement in 1986. He had been a member of St. Val’s Men’s Club and the American Legion Post 153 of Peabody. He later was a volunteer at the Harvard Mineralogical Museum in Cambridge and also at the Lafayette College in Easton, PA. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to many countries. Surviving him besides his wife are 3 Sons and daughters-in-laws, Andrew Murray, a recently retired teacher at Peabody High School, and Elaine Metropolis of Peabody, William Craig and Marilyn Metropolis of Lynnfield and Stephen George and Nancy Metropolis of Lititz, PA, a brother and sister-in-law, James and Sophia Metropolis of Peabody, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Papamichael and Charlotte and George Chronis all of Peabody, 6 grandchildren, Ted and Georgia Metropolis of Peabody, Melanie and Liane Metropolis of Lynnfield and Lily and Samuel Metropolis of Letitz, PA and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Phyllis Metropolis, Stephen and George Metropolis. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the new 82 Lynn St., Peabody location. His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:00 am from the Funeral Home followed by Services in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
