Obituary of Dorothy M (Roach) Litzenburg

Dorothy (“Dot”) M. (Roach) Litzenburg, 92, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Masconomet Healthcare in Topsfield, MA. She was predeceased by her husband Robert (“Bob”) E. Litzenburg in 1989. Born and raised in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late Martin J. and Margaret (Kirkwood) Roach. In her early twenties, while married to Herbert T.W. Carleton, a career serviceman, she lived in various states and Germany. They later settled back in Peabody and finished raising their three children. Dot worked as a nurse’s aide at the former Danvers State Hospital for over 20 years before retiring and becoming a snowbird with her husband Bob and spending winters in Florida until his death in 1989. She loved music from the 1940s and enjoyed dancing at Wonderland in Revere and going to Salem Willows to listen to the swing bands. She enjoyed her Sunday drives and lunches with her son and grandson and her Saturday adventures to softball practice, Target and Bob’s Clam Hut with her granddaughter and great granddaughters. Dot is survived by her son, Michael Carleton of Peabody, her grandchildren Derrick Carleton and his partner Alysha Ciccolo of Derry, NH and Maryellen (Sweeney) and Dan Lear of Beverly and her devoted great granddaughters Samantha and Meaghan Lear of Beverly and her son-in-law, Brian Russell of Peabody. She was the mother of the late Shirley A. Russell and Herbert Carleton and the sister of the late Martin F. Roach and Lawrence Roach. Dot’s family is especially grateful for the services of North Shore Elder Services and the staff at Masconomet Healthcare as well as the Care Dimensions Hospice system for all their kindness extended to the family.
