Obituary of Joao Estrela

João S Estrela, 87, of Peabody, died Friday evening at his home surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Maria Angela (Cordeiro) Estrela. Born in Sáo Miguel, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Manuel and Maria Conceicao (Correia) Estrela. He was born and raised in Sáo Miguel, Portugal before immigrating to Canada and then to the United States 50 years ago and has lived in Peabody ever since. While living in Peabody, Joao worked at several locations in Peabody before retiring from the maintenance department at Salem Hospital many years ago. He enjoyed gardening and tending to his meticulous grapevines. Joáo is survived by his son, Emanuel Estrela of OH, his two daughters, Maria Massey of Florida and Rosa Estrela of Peabody, and is also survived by his beloved 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters. His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00PM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
