Obituary of Thomas P. Cares, Sr

Thomas P. Cares, Sr, of Peabody, 83, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning at Beverly Hospital surrounded by his loving family following a period of declining health. He was the devoted husband of Maria (Regis) Cares with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage. Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Peter T. and Ellen (Driscoll) Cares. He was a lifelong resident of Peabody and a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1953. Thomas was employed as a machine operator for over 45 years in the leather industry and at GTE Sylvania before he retired. Following his retirement, he worked as a crossing guard for the Higgins Middle School. Thomas was always very active in sports, playing and coaching baseball in his younger years. He played for Peabody High School and continued playing for many years for the American Legion and CYO. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Red Sox and Patriots. He also enjoyed gardening and took pride in his landscaping. However, what he enjoyed most was spending time with his family and later his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, being there for all of their activities. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his son Thomas P. Cares, Jr. of Marblehead, his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Keith DellaGrotte of Peabody, his beloved 4 grandchildren, Robert, Tyler and his wife Jori, Courtney, and Ryan, and by his 4 great grandchildren, Oliver, Jada, Willow and Jacob. His funeral will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
